The Joy of You Tube

Today I watched an entire hour of Western Truck and Tractor Repair, out of California, on You Tube.  Why?

When you are raised on a farm and your father is a certified mechanic, you get involved in such work.

But I am not so mechanically inclined. I did not inherit my dad's genes in this regard. I recognize that the logic behind repair is in the infinite number of functions of the myriad pieces on a tractor that one must hold in one's head. That just isn't me.

Warren is the mechanic and he is simply brilliant. He remembers it all, he uses perfect logic in his diagnosis and his work encompasses mechanical, electrical, computer, hydraulic and air conditioning problems.

Most often the equipment is not serviced well, serviced incorrectly or repaired without the proper parts. This creates additional problem solving challenges, but Warren overcomes all of the problems.

Most amazing is that nothing stops this man in his work. So his clients are so lucky. He doggedly plows through every problem until the machine is repaired and back to normal. His rate is less than the big shops, his devotion to the task is without deviation and the equipment is repaired far sooner than at the dealership and for a lot less money. He stands behind his work and often goes above what he charges for.

His clients also can't complain and chisel him down about his work because he creates You Tube videos of his work. So we watch him work with such care on his customers' machines. Not only is his work meticulous, but it is impeccably recorded for client and viewer alike and posted regularly on You Tube.

I have watched him pull apart the hydraulic units on the back of several different sized John Deere tractors of varying ages. He finds the problems in the complex hydraulic systems, and rebuilds them so that they work perfectly. After watching his work, I could slowly replay the You Tube video and do the work on such tractors myself. Such is the quality of his video record of the task.  And the record also shows that while it is a complex hydraulic system, John Deere has some obvious problems with it and with the sensors that monitor the hydraulic systems that they make.

Warren often has to use aftermarket computer diagnostics and programs as well as an unbelievable number of manuals in order to get things working. His tools and computer equipment costs a fortune. But Warren doesn't grouse about it, he buys what he needs and goes to work.

The farmers, ranchers, loggers and fire fighters are so fortunate to have Warren living in that area and working for them. Sometimes the machinery owners are rather abusive, cut corners, shave the bill and outright lie.   Others are considerate and caring and ask for original equipment repairs that ensure their machines will be running in the best condition for years to come.

There is a stunning visual quality to these videos, a sleuth-like puzzle to solve, and storytelling as Warren goes about his daily work. His viewers often connect with Warren and Warren takes the time to connect in the comment section with his viewers. There is this personal intricate interaction between Warren and the viewer that puts the viewer into the scene. You are sitting on the oil barrel listening to Warren tell the stories as you watch him work. You see great scenery and enjoy the escapades of his two dogs.

Best of all, this activity is devoid of commercials. Warren is not plugging any products or seeking patrons or selling his own merchandise. He is that plain and simple neighbor you knew your whole life who had no more desire than to do a job, do it right and do it well. He seeks no accolades, more likely, he seeks clean overalls, food to eat and a family to come home to every day. He makes good money the hard way, by himself.

This man is a lesson for everyone of what constitutes a quality life. It is a moral lesson about honesty, consistency and interdependence. The You Tube videos become object lessons about dealing with difficulties, about living in a consistent way, every day. The videos are a great gift for those who can spend the time watching them. They illuminate all that is right in this world when so much, including modern machinery is wrong.

So, I will continue to watch Western Truck and Tractor repair videos on You Tube with great zeal. I will look forward eagerly to Warren's experiences and will gladly ignore any television or news event to spend some time with Warren around the machines.  In some ways, I suppose, I am back home with dad. For Warren's expert capture of his work on video is a path back in my mind to those times and places when I sat or stood and watched while my dad worked and explained.

Thank you Warren, for your wonderful gift.
